Misogyny Is Alive and Well

Whenever it was said that misogyny was the reason many were against Hillary Clinton as a presidential candidate I had my doubts. I didn’t doubt that there were large numbers of misogynists out there, but I also felt that most of them were Trump supporters anyway. It seemed more in line with his personality to attract those types. I didn’t buy the argument of (an overwhelming number of) people that would otherwise support a democratic candidate turning against Clinton simply because she was a woman. But the more I have talked to people post-election the more I am convinced I was completely wrong about that. There are at least a dozen acquaintances that have told me they voted for Trump, but would have voted for Bernie Sanders had he been a candidate. WHAT THE FUCK? I would have gladly voted for Bernie Sanders had he been an option, but Trump was in no way a second best. They have nothing in common at all. I can’t come up with any reasonable explanation for this bizarre about face except misogyny. There was no reason to vote for Trump over Clinton if Sanders was your first choice except that you can’t deal with the idea of a woman being the president. Misogyny plain and simple.

I’m hoping that by 2020 Trump will have inspired enough misandry to make someone like Elizabeth Warren a viable candidate. Maybe both parties’ candidates will be women. Even better.

  1. Or it could be that people didn’t trust Clinton because of all of her political baggage. Might not have anything to do with the fact that she is a woman.
